Lion's Mane. Reishi. Cordyceps. Chaga. If you've spent any time in the functional coffee aisle, you've seen these names stacked on labels without much explanation of what any of them actually do, how they differ from each other, or which one is right for what you're trying to accomplish. This is the reference page we wish existed when we started formulating MoodWell: one place with every major functional mushroom used in coffee, what it's traditionally used for, what the actual research says, and where to find it in our Shift Collection.
Six mushrooms show up again and again in functional coffee: Lion's Mane, Reishi, Cordyceps, Chaga, Turkey Tail, and Shiitake. Here's the honest, research-grounded breakdown of each.
The Complete Mushroom Comparison Table

| Reishi | Stress resilience, immune support | Immunomodulation, cortisol regulation | RESTORE, CALM |
| Cordyceps | Athletic performance, endurance | Oxygen utilization, ATP production | RESTORE |
| Chaga | Antioxidant support, immune health | Antioxidant status, inflammation markers | HUSTLE |
| Turkey Tail | Gut and immune health | Gut microbiota, immune markers | Not currently in the Shift Collection |
| Shiitake | Immune support, cholesterol balance | Immune markers, lipid profiles | Not currently in the Shift Collection |
Lion's Mane (Hericium erinaceus)
Lion's Mane is the mushroom most associated with cognitive support, and it's the headline ingredient in both HUSTLE and CALM. Early human research is encouraging but still developing: a small 2019 trial reported cognitive improvement in older adults with mild cognitive impairment, and research has explored its role in supporting nerve growth factor (NGF) production. A more recent 2025 randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study out of the University of Surrey, published in Frontiers in Nutrition, tested a single 3g dose in healthy younger adults and found a mixed picture: no significant effect on global cognition or mood composites, but a significant improvement in a dexterity task (the pegboard test) alongside a decline on one cognitive flexibility measure. The researchers called the results inconclusive and called for larger, longer trials. That nuance matters more than a marketing claim would suggest, and it's why we talk about Lion's Mane as something that supports focus rather than guarantees it. Reishi (Ganoderma lucidum)
Known historically as the "mushroom of immortality" across Korea, China, and Japan, Reishi has the deepest research base of the functional mushrooms on this list, largely around immune modulation. A 2012 trial reported improved quality of life in advanced colorectal cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, and a 2008 trial reported improved immune markers in people with type 2 diabetes. Reishi anchors both RESTORE and CALM, where it's paired with Cordyceps and Lion's Mane respectively for two very different use cases — recovery and calm focus. Our deep dive on the stress and sleep research is in Reishi Mushroom for Stress and Sleep.
Cordyceps (Cordyceps militaris)
Cordyceps has a long history in Chinese medicine tied to athletic performance, and the modern research focus is on oxygen utilization and cellular energy production. A 2010 study reported improved exercise performance in healthy older adults. The overall evidence base here is still considered limited by researchers, but the mechanism — supporting ATP production at the cellular level — is well understood, which is why Cordyceps is the performance-recovery anchor in RESTORE. Chaga (Inonotus obliquus)
Chaga is a parasitic fungus that grows on birch trees, and it's one of the most antioxidant-dense foods studied. A 2016 trial reported improved immune function in healthy adults, and a 2010 trial reported improved antioxidant status in people with chronic hepatitis C. It pairs with Lion's Mane in HUSTLE, where its role is less about acute stimulation and more about supporting the body's baseline resilience. More in Chaga Mushroom Benefits.
Turkey Tail and Shiitake: Worth Knowing, Not Yet in the Shift Collection
Turkey Tail (Trametes versicolor) is best known for gut and immune research — a 2018 trial reported improved gut microbiota composition in healthy adults. Shiitake (Lentinula edodes) has research behind immune markers and cholesterol management, including a 2015 study on immune markers and a 2014 trial on cholesterol levels. Neither is currently part of a MoodWell formula, but they round out the full picture of what "functional mushroom" actually covers — and we'll be transparent if that ever changes.
How to Choose
If you want focus and energy without the energy-drink spike, Lion's Mane and Chaga (HUSTLE) is your combination. If you're training hard and need genuine recovery support, Reishi and Cordyceps (RESTORE) is built for that. If you want calm, clear-headed presence without sedation, Reishi and Lion's Mane (CALM) is the formula. Still unsure? Our Which MoodWell Is Right for You guide walks through it in more detail.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is it safe to take multiple functional mushrooms together?
Generally, yes — most functional mushroom blends combine two or more species, as MoodWell does. As always, talk to a healthcare provider if you're pregnant, nursing, or managing a medical condition.
Which mushroom has the strongest research behind it?
Reishi currently has the broadest evidence base, particularly around immune modulation. Lion's Mane research is growing quickly but remains mixed and early-stage.
Do functional mushrooms taste like mushrooms?
No. In extract form, functional mushrooms are essentially flavorless in coffee — you're not tasting portobello in your cup.
How long until I notice an effect?
This varies by person and by mushroom. Some people report a subjective difference within days; the research behind most of these ingredients involves weeks to months of consistent use.
