How It Works

How the Color Shift Works

Every MoodWell Shift coffee starts the same way. Hot water turns it deep blue. Then you add your Bloom Sachet — and it transforms into your mood color. Here is exactly what is happening and why.

Step 1: Brew Your Coffee Blue

Add one teaspoon of your MoodWell Shift coffee to your cup. Pour 8–10 oz of hot water (around 170°F). Watch it bloom. The deep indigo-blue color comes entirely from butterfly pea flower (Clitoria ternatea) — a flower native to Southeast Asia that has been used in traditional cooking and wellness practices for centuries. When dissolved in hot water, its anthocyanin pigments produce a rich, natural blue with no artificial dyes.

Step 2: Add Your Bloom Sachet

Every order includes Bloom Sachets — small, pre-measured packets of our mood-specific color modifier. Drop it in and watch the shift happen in real time.

  • HUSTLE Bloom Sachet — contains citric acid. Acid lowers the pH of the blue butterfly pea flower liquid, triggering a chemical shift to violet/purple. The same principle behind why your citrus lemonade turns pink.
  • RESTORE Bloom Sachet — contains spirulina powder. Spirulina adds its own teal-green pigment to the blue, creating a rich teal color blend that also adds protein, B vitamins, and chlorophyll.
  • CALM Bloom Sachet — contains oat milk powder. Oat milk gently raises the pH and dilutes the blue pigment, creating a soft lavender as the alkaline environment shifts the anthocyanin spectrum.

Step 3: Stir and Shift

As you stir, the full color reveal happens — violet, teal, or lavender swirling through the indigo base. The transition is gradual enough to film, striking enough to stop mid-sip, and completely natural in every way.

The Science Behind It

Butterfly pea flower gets its color from anthocyanins — the same class of antioxidant pigments found in blueberries, red cabbage, and purple sweet potato. Anthocyanins are pH indicators: in acidic conditions (pH below 7) they shift toward red and purple. In neutral to slightly alkaline conditions they hold blue. Add enough alkalinity and they can appear green or teal when mixed with other pigments.

The HUSTLE shift (blue to violet) is the most dramatic pH-driven change. The RESTORE shift (blue to teal) is a pigment blending effect. The CALM shift (blue to lavender) is a dilution and pH effect combined. All three are fully natural — and all three happen in seconds.

What About the Coffee?

Your MoodWell Shift coffee base is a single-origin freeze-dried Arabica instant coffee from Papua New Guinea — high-altitude grown, medium roast, infused with adaptogenic mushroom powder. The butterfly pea flower is incorporated into the base, so the blue happens automatically when you add water. No extra steps before the Bloom Sachet.

Do I Taste the Color?

Butterfly pea flower has a very mild, slightly floral and earthy flavor that blends seamlessly with the coffee and adaptogens. The HUSTLE's citric acid gives a subtle brightness. RESTORE's spirulina is nearly undetectable in coffee. CALM's oat milk gives genuine creaminess. Most people cannot identify any of the modifiers by taste — they just notice the coffee tastes cleaner and more interesting than their usual cup.

Can I Customize My Shift?

Yes. The Bloom Sachets are pre-measured for the standard shift, but you can experiment. Use half a sachet for a lighter color, add more citric acid to go deeper into violet, or try adding hot lemon juice to your HUSTLE for an even more dramatic pH shift. The chemistry is yours to explore.
